For some people going from the hectic pace of the work week to retirement is a difficult adjustment. Some people miss the feeling of accomplishment that working provided, are bored and feel useless. But as with anything else, retirement is what you make of it and it’s really a matter of how you view it.
You should think of retirement as a way for you to finally relax and enjoy life - like taking a relaxing drive in the country instead of blasting full tilt in the fast lane of the expressway. Retirement is a time for doing all those things you always wanted to do but never had time for.
Sometimes it just takes a bit of perspective - remember those stressful work days when you just wanted to toss everything and relax at the beach - well now is your time for that! Finally you can enjoy the fruits of all those years of labor.
If you’ve recently retired and you are feeling a bit anxious then it’s probably just because you have experienced a huge change in your life. After working for most of your adult years, finally you don’t have to be somewhere at 8 AM! It can be an emotional time, but give yourself some time and I think you will find that you can adjust to retirement quite nicely!
Here are some ideas on things you can do to make your retirement days more fun:
- Pick up a hobby you always wanted to enjoy. Did you always yearn to be an artist - well there’s no time like now to take some lessons. How about golf, jewelry making or cooking?
- Sharpen the talents you have. If you’ve always had a talent for singing or dancing or anything else but never had the time to pursue it much then your retirement years are perfect for spending more time doing what you love.
- Volunteer. Maybe you always wanted to help others but never had time? Well now you can - think about volunteering at your local hospital or, if you love animals, the humane society. It’s a great way to feel useful and stay connected to the community.
- Reconnect. You’ve probably fallen out of touch with old friends but now that you have loads of time on your hands you might want to look up some of them and keep in touch. Chances are they have more time too and what better way to spend your golden years than reliving those fun times you had in younger days.
- Travel. If you’ve wanted to see the world but never had time then retirement is your perfect opportunity. Pack your bags and go! An added bonus - you can regularly find senior discounts at hotels.
